Replacement of protective covers and check of a condition of CV JOINTS
At detection of defects of a protective cover the condition of the corresponding CV JOINT has to be carefully studied. Often on an exchange basis it is possible to get completely restored assemblies of power shafts that considerably simplifies a situation and allows to reduce time expenditure. Before starting dismantle of components, carry out marketing, having found out the prices of necessary spare parts. Compare them costs of acquisition of the restored assemblies.
In shops of automobile accessories it is possible to meet protective covers for CV JOINTS of a cutting design. Installation of such covers does not demand dismantle of a shaft from the car that in principle is very convenient. However, authors of the present manual recommend to remove nevertheless shaft for check of a condition of CV JOINTS and stuffing by their fresh lubricant. |
Remove a power shaft (see the Section Removal and installation of power shafts). Internal CV JOINT
DISMANTLING
1. Shoot bandage films of fastening of a protective cover and shift the last lengthways on a shaft, providing easy access to the hinge.
2. Mark the provision of an internal holder and separator of hinged assembly concerning a shaft. |
3. Having hooked the small screw-driver, take an internal lock ring from a hinge casing. |
4. Remove a casing from bearing assembly. |
5. By means of special flat-nose pliers take a lock ring from a landing flute on a pin of a power shaft. |
6. Remove an internal holder of the bearing from a shaft pin. At "prikipaniye" of shlits impregnate components with the getting oil and accurately tap assembly by the hammer through a brass drift. 7. By means of the screw-driver and wooden whetstone release bearing balls from a separator, - try not to damage internal surfaces of the last. remove a separator.
8. Remove a lock ring of fastening of an internal holder. Remove a protective cover of the hinge from a shaft. |
Check of a state
Wash out hinge components in solvent, having completely cleared them of traces of old lubricant. Estimate a condition of an internal holder and a separator so far.
ASSEMBLY
1. Wind vents on a shaft pin with an adhesive tape layer, then put a protective cover of the hinge on a shaft. Remove an adhesive tape and put on a bandage tape of bigger diameter a cover. |
2. Put on a shaft pin a separator of bearing assembly (the party of smaller diameter to the central part of a shaft).
3. Latch a lock ring of fixing of an internal holder on the regular place, then put the last on a shaft pin, watching correctness of combination of the components of landing tags put in the course of dismantle. |
4. Record an internal holder of the bearing a lock ring, having tracked reliability of landing of the last in a reception flute on a shaft pin, - the holder should not move lengthways on a shaft. 5. Pull a separator over an internal holder of the bearing (again track correctness of combination of landing tags) fill bearing balls in separator windows.
For temporary fixing of balls in assembly previously dip them in lubricant for stuffing of CV JOINTS. |
6. Fill lubricant an external holder of the bearing and a protective cover of the CV JOINT (lubricant is usually delivered complete with a new cover). The same lubricant fill cavities of a separator and an internal holder. |
7. Fill bearing sideways in a casing of the hinge and establish an internal lock ring.
8. Remove excess of lubricant from a flute under landing of a cover on an external holder. Fill edge of a cover (from smaller diameter) in landing deepening on a shaft body. Pull the second end of a cover on a casing of the CV JOINT and move assembly, trying to obtain elimination of excess deformations of rubber. |
9. Make adjustment of landing length of a protective cover of the hinge. having hooked the stupid screw-driver edge of a cover, level pressure under it, - try not to tear a cover.
10. Fix a cover by bandage tapes. |
11. Establish a new lock ring for the end of a pin of assembly of the internal CV JOINT. 12. Install a power shaft on the car (see the Section Removal and installation of power shafts). |
External CV JOINT
REMOVAL
1. Release bandage tapes of fastening of a protective cover. Remove a cover from hinged assembly. 2. Clamp assembly of a shaft in a vice with soft sponges and force down the hinge by means of the hammer with brass brisk. Having brought down the hinge, remove a lock ring of an internal holder of the bearing.
3. Carefully wash out the hinge in solvent and dry it, whenever possible, with use of compressed air. The external CV JOINT to dismantling will not lie down in view of what its cleaning and stuffing can take away a lot of time. |
Check of a state
Unbend a casing of the external CV JOINT at an angle to an assembly axis so that access to surfaces of an internal holder, a separator and bearing balls opened. Estimate degree of wear and deformation of components. The defective hinge is subject to replacement. |
ASSEMBLY
1. Pull a protective cover of the CV JOINT on a shaft (the pin of a shaft equipped with vents will be reasonable to be wound previously with a protective layer of an adhesive tape). Having put a cover, remove an adhesive tape.
2. Establish a lock ring of fixing of an internal holder of the bearing. |
3. Densely fill hinge cavities fresh lubricant. |
4. Having rested a shaft vertically against a workbench surface, begin to knock on it hinged assembly by the hammer through wooden whetstone. |
5. Put a protective cover on the regular place and fill under it the become lubricant. Adjust the landing length of a cover. Level pressure and fix a cover by new bandage tapes. |
Both CV JOINTS Establish into place a power shaft (see the Section Removal and installation of power shafts). |
