Power shafts - the general information and check of a state

Torque transmission from transmission to driving wheels of the car is made by means of power shafts. The internal ends of both shaft enter directly the side gear wheels of differential equipped with reciprocal vents.

External pins of shaft are also equipped with vents, passed throughout naves of driving wheels and fixed in them by big stupichny nuts.

The internal ends of power shafts are equipped with the hinges of equal angular speeds (HEAS) of the sliding type providing freedom as an inclination of assemblies under various corners, and their longitudinal shift in the certain range. The basic working element of internal CV JOINTS is the bearing assembly of double compensation consisting of the ball-bearings placed between an internal holder and an external separator. Hinges can be disassembled for cleaning of components and check of their state. In case of detection of ineradicable defects the failed hinge is replaced assembled.

The external ends of power shafts are equipped with Rzeppa CV JOINTS ("sheppa" is said) or "Birfield" which are also consisting of the ball-bearings placed between an internal holder and an external separator, however a design of these hinges unlike internal provides only angular degree of freedom of components, at total absence of a possibility of longitudinal movement. These hinges are not subject to dismantling and in case of violation of serviceability of functioning have to be replaced.

The condition of protective covers of CV JOINTS has to be checked on a regular basis. In case of identification of cuts or cracks the failed covers have to be replaced, and hinges are newly filled by fresh lubricant. Replacement of covers is made after preliminary dismantle of power shafts (see the Section Removal and installation of power shafts).

In shops of automobile accessories it is possible to meet covers of CV JOINTS of a cutting design. Installation of such covers can be made on the shaft established on the car that is not recommended to be done as when replacing covers it is always necessary to check internal state of hinges.

The most typical signs of wear/damage of CV JOINTS, besides lubricant loss, is emergence of the gnash proceeding from a stupichny part of forward wheels during commission of turns (usually the gnash is published by a wheel, internal on turn radius). Also the probability of emergence of similar sounds in combination with sharply accruing vibration is not excluded during acceleration of the car. For check of a condition of CV JOINTS it is necessary to grasp with one hand a shaft, another - the case of the hinge and, making attempts of rotation of components to the opposite sides, to estimate the size of the side play taking place. Existence of a little noticeable side play testifies to wear of shlits or internal components of bearing assembly. At the same time examine shaft on existence of cracks, deformations and other damages of the mechanical plan.
