Check of serviceability of functioning and replacement of the thermostat

Do not open a cover of a radiator and do not remove the thermostat before full cooling of the engine! See also prevention at the beginning of the Section Antifreeze - general information.



1. Before finally being approved in opinion on a thermostat exit out of operation, check the level of cooling liquid in system, a state and effort of a tension of a driving belt (see the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance), and also serviceability of functioning of the measuring instrument of temperature.
2. One of possible jamming of the thermostat in open situation is the reason of too slow warming up of the engine (according to indications of the measuring instrument). Replace the thermostat new.
3. In case of an overheat of the engine touch the top hose of a radiator. If the hose is not heated, perhaps, the thermostat is jammed in a closed position, blocking circulation of cooling liquid through a radiator. Replace the thermostat.

Do not operate the car with the removed thermostat at all! At the same time feedback of the onboard processor can be broken that will lead to increase in toxicity of the fulfilled gases and excessive increase in fuel consumption.

4. If the top hose is heated, it means that cooling liquid regularly circulates through a radiator, i.e. the thermostat is open. Address materials of the Section devoted to diagnostics of malfunctions of the cooling system.

5. For conducting more detailed check the thermostat needs to be removed from the engine. If the thermostat remains open at the room temperature, it has to be replaced.

6. Tie up a string piece to assembly of the thermostat (the valve has to be in a closed position) and lower the last in a heat-resistant container with cold water, there place the thermometer.

7. Install a container on a plate and begin to watch behavior of the valve, at the same time monitoring indications of the thermometer.

No thermometer, the thermostat should not concern container walls!

8. Mark the indication of the thermometer at the moments of the beginning of opening and full opening of the valve. Compare results of measurements to requirements of Specifications.

On the case of the thermostat the nominal rate of temperature of full opening of the valve is usually beaten out. The beginnings of opening which are also given on temperature and size of opening of the valve can be specified.

9. It is faulty the functioning assembly replace.



1. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting the battery make sure that you have the correct combination for input of the audio system in action!

2. Merge cooling liquid from a radiator and the block of the engine (see the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance). If replacement of mix was made recently, keep it for further use.
3. On SOHC engines disconnect the top radiator hose from a branch pipe of production of water on the inlet pipeline and from a radiator, then release an intermediate clamp on a forward cover of the GRM drive and remove a hose. Disconnect perepuskny a hose from a thermostat cover.
4. On DOHC engines take off driving belts and an arm of an intermediate roller. Also remove the lower hose of a radiator and turn out a drain stopper of the water pump from the block wall turned forward on the car.
5. Uncover the thermostat, - try to remember its adjusting situation. Prepare for collecting the spilled liquid.

6. Remove the thermostat, - remember its adjusting situation.

7. Carefully smooth out sealing surfaces of a cover and a casing of the thermostat a scraper, then wipe with their rags moistened in solvent.

8. Impose a RTV sealant pillow on perimeter of the interfaced cover surface. Deploy the thermostat so that that the plunger of the valve of pumping appeared in the top point, establish it on the regular place in a cover/casing and within five minutes after imposing of sealant you priboltit a cover to a casing.

9. Further installation is made as it should be the return to an order of dismantle of components. Track that all fixture was tightened with the required effort, and hoses are connected correctly.
10. Having allowed sealant to stiffen during about half an hour, fill the cooling system and release from it air traffic jams (see the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance). Start the engine and check it for existence of leaks and serviceability of functioning of the thermostat.
