Failure diagnostics of AT/CVT - the general information

Refusals of AT most often happen for one of the following five reasons:

a) Decrease in efficiency of return of the engine;
b) Violation of adjustments;
c) Malfunction of hydraulics;
d) Mechanical damages;
e) Failures of the onboard processor / its alarm chain.

Failure diagnostics always has to begin with the simplest checks: estimate the level and a condition of ATF (see the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance), check adjustment of drives of gear shifting and a butterfly valve. Further, carry out trial runs of the car for the purpose of definition of efficiency of the made corrections. If it was not succeeded to fix a problem, it is necessary to drive away the car on car repair shop for more detailed diagnostics with use of the special equipment. The description of some of symptoms of refusals of AT is provided in the Section devoted to failure diagnostics of knots and systems of the car at the beginning of the Present Manual.

Primary checks

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. During a short trip warm up transmission up to the normal working temperature.
2. Check the ATF level (see the Head Nastroyki and routine maintenance):

a) If liquid is obviously not enough, make the corresponding adjustment, having added necessary quantity ATF is fresher. Be convinced of correctness of the carried-out adjustment according to indications of the measuring probe, then check transmission for existence of signs of external leaks (see below);
b) If level is excessively high, merge surplus of ATF, then check it for existence of the traces of presence of cooling liquid demonstrating violation of tightness of the internal partitions of a radiator separating its heat exchanger from side tanks with ATF (see the Head of the Cooling system, heating);
c) If ATF is made foam, empty transmission and fill it with fresh liquid, - check the merged ATF for existence of traces of presence of cooling liquid.
3. Check installation of turns of idling of the engine (see the Head of the Power supply system and release). In case of need drive away the car on car repair shop for performance of the corresponding adjustments.

 If the engine not as it should be, it is not necessary to start performance of primary checks of transmission until the corresponding corrections are made.

4. Check freedom of movement of a cable of control of the gear shifting drive (see the Section Check, adjustment and replacement of a cable of gear shifting), make sure of correctness of adjustment and smoothness of the course of draft.


Diagnostics of leakages of ATF

General information


The majority of leaks easily come to light at visual check. Repair usually consists in replacement of the corresponding defective epiploon or laying. If it is not possible to reveal a leak source during external survey, act as it is described below.

First of all it is necessary to exclude probability of a mistake in definition of the nature of leak. It is not necessary to confuse ATF to motive oil or brake fluid (transmission liquid usually has dark red color).

For identification of a source of leak make short (several kilometers) a trip, then park the car over the outspread blank sheet of a cardboard. Later a couple of minutes the source of leak can be revealed in the wake of the liquid dripping on a cardboard.

Attentively examine the suspected site and the surface surrounding it, paying special attention to joints of the interfaced pro-masonry surfaces. For the purpose of expansion of a viewing angle use a pocket mirror.

If it is not possible to reveal a leak source still, carefully wipe the surface of the suspected site with the rags moistened with solvent, then dry it.

Make one more short trip, this time often changing the speed of the movement, then again examine the cleaned suspected site.

After identification of a source of leak, it is necessary to define and remove the cause of its development, and only then to pass to performance of necessary recovery work. Replacement of the damaged laying will not result in desirable result if to leave not eliminated the defect of the interfaced surface which led to a sealant exit out of operation. So, the deformed flange needs to be aligned.

In the following subsections the most typical reasons of development of leakages of ATF and a condition which have to be executed that there was no recurrence are listed.

 Part cannot be executed from the listed requirements without use of the special equipment. In this case the car should be driven away on car repair shop.


Leaks through pro-masonry surfaces

Periodically examine the transmission case pallet. Check existence on the places and reliability of tightening of fixing bolts, you watch that on a cover traces of mechanical damages did not appear (deformation of the pallet can lead to failure of the valvate assembly located in transmission).

Via the pallet excessively hard tightening of fixing bolts, damage of a sealing surface of a case of transmission, laying destruction, and also emergence of cracks or porosity of walls of a case are among the possible reasons of development of leaks. If laying of the pallet or a case of transmission is formed by a sealant pillow, the probability of the wrong choice of type of the last is not excluded. Through laying of the pallet can lead to leaks also overflow of a case transmission liquid, or increase in pressure of ATF.

Leaks through epiploons and cuffs

The most typical reasons of an exit of epiploons of transmission excessively high ATF level, violation of passability of a ventilating branch pipe, mechanical damage of walls of a landing nest, damage actually out of operation are among an epiploon, or the wrong installation of the last. Also the probability of damage of a pin of the shaft passed throughout an epiploon, or an excessive side play of the last as a result of wear of bearings is not excluded.

Check a state and correctness of landing of a sealing cuff of the directing tube of the measuring probe. Periodically examine on existence of signs of leaks a surface around an arrangement of a driving gear wheel of the speedometer/sensor of the speed (VSS). In case of need you make replacement of a sealing ring.

Leaks through defects in transmission case walls


Formation of cracks or time in a transmission case body can be the reason of development of leakages of ATF. Consult at specialists of car service.

Check tightness of nipple knots of connection of hoses of a cooler of ATF.

Leaks through сапун and a jellied mouth


Leaks through сапун ventilation or a jellied mouth can happen owing to overflow of transmission, hit in ATF of cooling liquid, passability violation сапуна / a ventilating branch pipe or returnable drainage openings.

Diagnostic codes of malfunctions of AT

The onboard processor which is responsible for functioning to AT constantly monitors the violations taking place in system (including contours of information sensors and actuation mechanisms). At detection of malfunction in memory of the control unit the corresponding diagnostic code is brought. At car repair shop the codes of malfunctions brought in the processor memory can be taken by means of the device known under the name "CONSULT", or readers of skanerny type. The owner of the car can make reading of codes independently, using the signals highlighted by a control lamp of shutdown of the mode of increase in transfer "OD OFF" on an instrument guard of the car.

Models 1993 and 1994 of of the issue.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Start the engine and warm up it up to the normal working temperature.
2. Turn the ignition key in position of OFF.
3. Transfer the selector of the mode of functioning of AT to position of AUTO.
4. Translate the switch of the mode of the raising transfer to position of ON.
5. Transfer the selector lever to situation "P".
6. Without starting the engine, include ignition.
7. A control lamp of OD OFF has to join approximately for two seconds:

a) The refusal of inclusion of a lamp testifies to malfunction of the processor of management of functioning of AT (before make sure that the lamp did not fail actually). Authors of the present manual do not recommend to perform measurement of resistance and tension on processor plugs as casual jumps a tension / transmission via the control unit of excessively high current are capable to put the last out of action. Drive away the car for check on car repair shop.
b) If the control lamp of OD OFF works regularly, pass to the following stage of check.
8. Switch off ignition.
9. Transfer the selector lever to situation "D".
10. Turn off the raising transfer, having turned the mode switch in position of OFF.
11. Without starting the engine, include ignition.
12. Not less than two seconds later after inclusion of ignition transfer the selector lever to situation "2".
13. Having turned the switch in position of ON, include the raising transfer.
14. Transfer the selector lever to situation "1".
15. Turn off the mode of the raising transfer (OFF).
16. Squeeze out the accelerator pedal against the stop, then release it.
17. Now the processor has to pass into the mode of issue of information. Reading of the codes of malfunctions brought in memory of the block can be made on gleams of a control lamp of OD OFF.


Models from 1995 to 1997 the issue.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Start the engine and warm up it up to the normal working temperature.
2. Switch off ignition and before starting implementation of the procedure, wait not less than five seconds.
3. Turn the ignition key in the provision of ASS
4. Translate the switch of the mode of the raising transfer to position of ON.
5. Transfer the selector lever to situation "P".
6. Without starting the engine, include ignition.
7. A control lamp of OD OFF has to join approximately for two seconds:

a) The refusal of inclusion of a lamp testifies to malfunction of the processor of management of functioning of AT (before make sure that the lamp did not fail actually). Authors of the present manual do not recommend to perform measurement of resistance and tension on plugs the processor as casual jumps a tension / transmission via the control unit of excessively high current are capable to put the last out of action. 16. Turn off the mode of the raising transfer (OFF).

8. Transfer the selector lever to situation "D".
9. Without starting the engine, include ignition.
10. Turn off the mode of the raising transfer (drown the switch button in position of OFF), then switch off ignition and again include it. Release the switch of the raising transfer (the lamp has to go out).
11. Not less than two seconds later after inclusion of ignition transfer the selector lever to situation "2".
12. Drown the button of the switch of the raising transfer and, holding it pressed, transfer the selector lever to situation "1".
13. Switch off the raising transfer (the lamp has to go out).
14. Squeeze out the accelerator pedal against the stop, then release it.
15. Now the processor has to pass into the mode of issue of information. Reading of the codes of malfunctions brought in memory of the block can be made on gleams of a control lamp of OD OFF.


All models

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. If all traced contours function regularly, the control lamp will give one long gleam, then ten short through equal intervals between them.
2. It is noted reference marks of highlighting of each of codes by one long gleam after which ten consecutive gleams defining actually number of a code follow:

a) If the first gleam from ten meaning is long, therefore, malfunction in a RPM meter chain takes place;
b) The long second gleam means refusal in VSS chain;
c) The third long gleam corresponds to refusal in TPS chain;
d) The fourth - in a chain of the electromagnetic valve of gear shifting A 4
e) The fifth - in a chain of the electromagnetic valve of gear shifting In;
f) The sixth - in a chain of the electromagnetic valve switch of the obgonny coupling;
g) The seventh - in a chain of the electromagnetic valve switch of coupling of the converter of rotation;
h) The eighth - in ATF temperature sensor chain;
i) The ninth - in an alarm chain of turns of the engine;
j) The tenth - in a chain of the electromagnetic valve of pressure in a path;
k) Alternation of long gleams with long eclipses of a control lamp testifies to the low level of a charge of the battery;
l) On models for 1998 of the issue the refusal of inclusion of a control lamp of OD OFF demonstrates violation of serviceability of functioning of the sensor switch of permission of starts/fires of a backing, the switch of the raising transfer, or TPS;
m) On models of 1999 of the issue the refusal of inclusion of a lamp is usually connected with failure of the sensor switch of permission of starts/fires of a backing, or TPS.
3. Elimination of the malfunctions revealed during check demands from the performer of high qualification and it has to be entrusted to specialists of car service. The exception is made only by repair/replacement of VSS and TPS (see the Head of the Control system of the engine).


Cleaning of the processor memory of codes

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Cleaning of the processor memory is among the repair procedures performed by specialists of car repair shop. If reading of codes and necessary corrections were made by the owner of the car independently, act in the following order:
2. Switch off ignition (if it is included), wait not less than five seconds and again include it.
3. Perform procedures of reading of codes of malfunctions (see above).
4. Having turned the selector on the module of management (RSM), switch system from the Mode II mode to the Mode I mode (see the Head of the Control system of the engine).
